5th August 2018 - Well Done Gary

Here’s Gary’s summary of his latest epic achievement – Man V’s Lakes – a 50km ultra marathon adventure race and certainly not one for the faint-hearted:

Well what can I say – a very nervous start looking out over Morecambe Sands on the starting line.

Preparation hasn’t quite been the best with a recovery week after Edinburgh 70.3 followed by 10 days of the dreaded lurgee.

Anyway, here I was.

The race started with 10k over the sands including wading through a couple of thigh high foot soaking rivers.

I settled in over the sands which was surreal - running over the safe passage that had been marked out by Sedrick in his Antique tractor.

After the sands the elevation starts with the vertical kilometre challenge. All in all, there was almost 5000ft of climbing over the 50k’s.

Walking the Hills and running the rest with coach pats words “you’ll be fine” and my other mantra “just keep moving forward” in my head.

Before I knew it, I was in the final 10k where I felt quite good, finishing 162 out of the 449 finishers.

A great event with welcome relief from the heat coming from a bit of full submersion in a lake along the way (part of the course).

I highly recommend it.
